The Road to Qualmark Gold

For tourism businesses across New Zealand, earning a Qualmark accreditation is a milestone that symbolises quality, sustainability, and exceptional visitor experiences.

Qualmark, operated by Tourism New Zealand, supports operators in delivering high standards while minimising their environmental footprint and strengthening community and cultural engagement. For local businesses like Kaewa Tours and Aston Road Villa B&B in Waikanae, achieving the Gold Sustainable Tourism Business Award has been a triumph.

For Tom Collier of Kaewa Tours, Qualmark was a strategic decision from the start.

“The road to Qualmark Gold is challenging but the benefits are absolutely worth it.”

“The Gold accreditation not only enhances credibility but opens doors to premium opportunities, including hosting Tourism New Zealand’s media famils and gaining valuable international exposure.”

Likewise, for Louise Compton of Aston Road Villa B&B, Qualmark sets the business apart. “The accreditation provides a point of difference,” she says.

“It shows we’re delivering exceptional customer experiences.”

Their 5-star grade rating as a B&B further affirms the high quality of their private facilities and service.

Kaewa Tours started with a Bronze in 2021 and steadily worked their way up, achieving Gold in 2025 through continuous improvement and commitment.

“The biggest challenge was the assessment process and the time investment to provide the right data, it makes you look at every part of your business.” Tom says.

There is an annual fee that businesses must pay for the Qualmark assessment.

For Aston Road Villa B&B, analysing their environmental impact remains an ongoing focus. Their approach includes an annually updated Tourism Sustainability Commitment Action Plan covering 12 areas of sustainability, from short-term actions to three-year goals.

Louise estimates that in their first year of working towards accreditation, they put in over 80 hours. Their efforts paid off: Silver Sustainable Tourism 2022 with 4 star B&B rating, Gold Sustainable Tourism 2023 and 2024, and in 2024 achieving a 5-star B&B rating.

“It was great to be acknowledged for all the work we’ve put into the business over the last six years,” she says.

Both operators stress the value of support systems. Tom highlights the resources and credibility Qualmark provides, while Louise credits the NZ Bed and Breakfast Association for offering strong operational guidelines and a robust quality assurance programme.

“The Tiaki Promise is another excellent resource,” Louise adds, referring to the nationwide campaign encouraging responsible travel. She also recommends www.envirorental.earth, a free platform promoting sustainable practices for tourism businesses.

Importantly, Qualmark’s sustainable tourism business criteria are aligned with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, meaning New Zealand operators are benchmarking against international best practices.

When the final notification arrives, both businesses felt a sense of pride. “Absolutely ecstatic,” says Tom. “It’s incredible to reach this level in such a short time.”

For Louise, the recognition confirmed that Aston Road Villa B&B is among the country’s top-rated accommodations.

For businesses willing to put in the time and effort, the road to Qualmark Gold is well worth the journey—bringing both pride and practical business advantages and knowledge.
